/ setting

Setting and surroundings

Hyatt Regency New Orleans is a 32-story, 361-foot tower at 601 Loyola Avenue in New Orleans' Central Business District, designed by Welton Becket and Associates and opened in 1976, a year after the adjacent Caesars Superdome. The hotel is one of New Orleans' "big four" historic convention hotels alongside Hilton New Orleans Riverside, New Orleans Marriott, and Sheraton New Orleans. Hurricane Katrina severely damaged the property in August 2005; nearly all of the windows on one side were blown out or struck by debris, and the building served as a refuge for recovery crews, city officials, and medical personnel before closing for reconstruction. The hotel reopened October 19, 2011 following a $275 million renovation and transformation. The former porte-cochere was converted into a 50,000 sq ft exhibit hall as part of that transformation. The function inventory totals 200,000 square feet of meeting and event space across 71 rooms per venue marketing copy (155,644 sq ft of formal indoor meeting rooms per Cvent, with the additional space accounted for by exhibit hall and pre-function areas). The largest combined bookable space is Elite Hall at 48,100 sq ft (Elite Hall A 24,762 sq ft and Elite Hall B 23,337 sq ft), configurable for 4,850 theater and 2,900 banquet, with a 10,000 sq ft Elite Foyer (700 theater). The Empire Ballroom is the marquee event ballroom at 22,538 sq ft per Cvent (rounded to 25,000 sq ft in venue marketing; 121 ft x 180 ft, 20 ft ceiling), configurable for 2,800 theater, 2,000 banquet, 2,445 classroom, and 2,800 reception standing. Component rooms run Empire A at 8,797 sq ft (700 theater, 500 banquet, 680 classroom), Empire B at 6,457 sq ft (700 theater, 500 banquet), Empire C at 3,583 sq ft (350 theater, 250 banquet), and Empire D at 3,625 sq ft (350 theater, 250 banquet). The Empire Ballroom features floor-to-ceiling windows, a balcony in the foyer, and blackout drapes; it divides into four sections. On-site dining covers Vitascope Hall (New Orleans-inspired American with locally sourced ingredients), 8 Block Kitchen & Bar (locally inspired American), and Bywater Pool Deck & Bar (casual poolside). The hotel sits in the Champions Square complex connected to Caesars Superdome, Smoothie King Center, 1250 Poydras Plaza, Entergy Tower, and Benson Tower. The closest commercial airport is Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY), a domestic hub 14 miles southwest of the property. The New Orleans Streetcar (Loyola/UPT line) runs at the property's doorstep; the French Quarter is roughly half a mile east.
