/ setting

Setting and surroundings

Dr. John Anderson discovered the mineral springs that anchor Omni Bedford Springs Resort in 1796, and the original Stone Inn opened in 1806 to serve travelers seeking the springs. The Greek Revival Colonial Building, designed by local architect Solomon Filler, was built by the Anderson family between 1829 and 1842. The property hosted multiple presidents in the 19th century: James Buchanan used it as his Summer White House from 1857 to 1861, where on August 12, 1858 he received the first transatlantic cable transmitted from England to the United States. William Henry Harrison, James K. Polk, and Zachary Taylor also visited; Ronald Reagan visited in 1975. A portion of the property was designated a National Historic Landmark District in 1984. After a period of decline, Bedford Resort Partners Limited acquired the property in 1998 for $8 million and led an extensive multi-year restoration that completed July 12, 2007. Omni Hotels & Resorts acquired the property in January 2009 and operates it today within the Omni Resort Collection. The resort offers 216 guest rooms and four suites. Cvent records 17 meeting rooms totaling 48,708 square feet (an inclusive figure that combines indoor and outdoor functions); third-party wedding-venue sources reference more than 20,000 square feet of indoor flexible meeting space. The largest single bookable room, the Colonnade Ballroom, runs 4,802 square feet. The second-largest, the Eisenhower Ballroom, runs 2,550 square feet and accommodates 169 ceremony-style or 112 dinner-reception per the property's wedding sales sheet. Other named meeting rooms include Reagan Ballroom (with Salons A and B), Constitution Hall, the Buchanan, Taylor, Anderson, Navy, Harrison, and Army Rooms, and the First Ladies Lounge. The published overall capacity is 316 standing or 288 seated. Five on-property dining venues serve the meetings program: the 1796 Room (steak and chophouse, Colonial-era ambiance), The Crystal Room (upscale traditional, the original main dining room), Frontier Tavern (casual lunch and tavern in the 1806 Stone Inn building), Evitt House Coffee, and Tillie's at the Clubhouse golf-side. The 18-hole Donald Ross 1923 golf course (built on Spencer Oldham's 1895 layout and A.W. Tillinghast's 1912 nine-hole expansion) remains a primary draw alongside the Springs Eternal Spa. The property's geography places practical hub airport routing through Pittsburgh International (PIT, ~115 miles by road, ~2 hours 40 minutes, domestic hub), Washington Dulles (IAD, ~92 miles, international hub), or Harrisburg International (MDT, ~94 miles, regional). The closest commercial airport, Altoona-Blair County (AOO), sits ~23 miles north and is a small facility. Most attendees drive in.
